LES WOOSEY & MALCOLM CAMPBELL:
THE SHADOWS ON RADIO LUXEMBOURG

GUITAR BOOGIE
(Arthur Smith)

The Shadows committed GUITAR BOOGIE to record in their live South Africa concert of Spring 1961. It was hardly a crystal-clear forerunner of the group's own take on the Smith classic, SHADOOGIE, but then neither is this version. The essential difference between the two is that whereas the SA version has some claim to be regarded as a respectable instrumental of the 60s, the Luxembourg take sounds positively 50s, rumbling along in a solid, stolid, determined way. In other words, the RL GUITAR BOOGIE sounds as if it was recorded earlier rather than later, indeed in 1959 (with the scratchy Antoria!) rather than 1960 or 1961. It had been a 1959 UK hit and it was an easy tune just begging to be added to their (then) slender repertoire, as indeed it was, as an outro on 'Saturday Club' 24 October 1959. On the Luxembourg show, the song immediately before GUITAR BOOGIE is My Babe, itself assigned to 1959 by Paul Rumbol.
