LES WOOSEY & MALCOLM CAMPBELL:
THE SHADOWS ON RADIO LUXEMBOURG

GONZALES
(Bruce Welch/ Hank Marvin/ Jet Harris)

The album track was recorded on 26 October 1960 and released almost a year later in September 1961. This RL recording actually sounds (though see below) like one of those innumerable tries from the 1960 studio sessions rather than some new version laid down post-LP. It is relatively close in general performance to the album track but Hank displays his penchant for improvisation during the middle eight away from the main melody —though it has to be said that here deft fingerwork gives way to heavy reliance on the tremolo arm to keep things moving along.

There is an introduction by Cliff: "…The Shads did this a few weeks ago and would like to do it once more…" Thus the number was broadcast more that once, whether in the same or different takes, and these broadcasts at least were close together. Given the well publicised problem the group had getting GONZALES shipshape for their LP, it seems altogether unlikely that a Luxembourg version was tried earlier, and broadcasts of late 1961/1962 can safely be postulated. It was never aired on BBC Radio.

This particular GONZALES definitely followed, and plainly provided a stylistic contrast to, Where Is My Heart? in the show because Cliff actually mentions both during the link between the two numbers.
