REVIEW: "THE BEST OF THE SHADOWS / APACHE"

From: Shadsfax Issue 33 (2001) 4

The Shadows
"The Best Of The Shadows / Apache"
Magic Records (France) 3930082
Released May 2001

Apache / Midnight / Kon-Tiki / The Frightened City / FBI / Shazam! / Atlantis / It’s Been A Blue Day / Dakota / Shindig — Bonus tracks: Quatermasster’s Stores / Jet Black (studio version, mono) / Driftin’ (id.) / Man Of Mystery / The Stranger / Back Home / 36–24–36 / This Hammer / I Want You To Want Me / Walkin’ / Be-bop-a-lula

The parent album (for tracks 1–10) is the French 10" “The Best Of The Shadows”. In the brief annotation Bernard Broche gives the date of release as January 1964, but I must take issue with him on this point. Bernard himself offers 1963 in his own “Worldwide Discography”, and I purchased a copy in Edinburgh on Christmas Eve 1963 — I remember it well, as my first Shads overseas compilation.

The bonus tracks: various covers are pictured, French EPs to account for tracks 11–17 and 21, UK EPs for tracks 18–20 (none of these three having been released in France during the 60s). One extra I would have liked to see is a mono FBI to match the mono Wonderful Land provided on “Dance With” above.
