REVIEW: FANZINE – 60’S SCENE

From: Shadsfax Issue 30 (2001) 4–5

60’s Scene
"No. 11"
The Shadows: "Apache" 40th Anniversary
Published July 2000

Insignificant as instrumentals were (relatively speaking) in UK chart terms, few would quarrel with the contention that The Shadows’ Apache was one of the most significant releases of its decade, and it seems entirely fitting that this elegantly presented “International Magazine of the 60’s Era” should devote an entire issue to it. There is a “File” on Apache accumulating various facts and figures together with comments from Bruce Welch, “Q Magazine” and elsewhere; an extract relating to the number from Royston Ellis’ book “The Shadows By Themselves”; a further “File” on the original UK single and the reissues, taking in the snatches of the revamp on Shadowmix; a “Chart Scene” recording placings in “Record Retailer”, “Disc” and other major music papers of the time; and finally the results of an instrumental poll conducted among subscribers to “60’s Scene” and related mags in which your favourite and mine pipped Telstar to the post. Interspersed are some good pics, including one of the Harris line-up with Bruce sporting that decidedly attention-grabbing reindeer jumper!
