REVIEW: CLIFF RICHARD "THE WHOLE STORY"

From: Shadsfax Issue 29 (2000) 7

Cliff Richard
"The Whole Story — His Greatest Hits"
EMI 529322 2 [2CD]
Released 9 October 2000

Of the 46 tracks on this issue a mere 14* feature Cliff with accompaniment from The (mature) Drifters/ Shadows, but they are of particular interest because of the high quality of reproduction: remastered by Keith Bessey, the tracks in question (nearly all of them in mono) stand head and shoulders above most of what is on offer from other compilations (I have in mind notably the abysmal “40 Golden Greats”, and the superior but hardly world-beating “The Hit List”). EMI would do Cliff’s imposing recorded legacy an inestimable service by entrusting further key issues to Keith Bessey’s expertise: particularly the remaining A/B singles extending to the late 60s at least, and also certain 60’s LPs, notably those portions of “Finders Keepers” (which includes Shads numbers) not covered by the “At The Movies” set. The sound quality on the (now deleted) ‘2–on–1’ is plagued by distortion and other imperfections.

* The tracks are: Living Doll / Travellin’ Light / Please Don’t Tease / I Love You / The Young Ones / It’ll Be Me / Do You Wanna Dance / The Next Time / Bachelor Boy / Summer Holiday / Don’t Talk To Him / On The Beach / I Could Easily Fall In Love (With You) / In The Country
