PAUL RUMBOL:
CLIFF RICHARD & THE SHADOWS ON RADIO LUXEMBOURG

#42: SICK AND TIRED
(Chris Kenner/ Dave Bartholomew)
1960

A great track which really brings the Shadows 'new' echo sound to the fore and enables Hank to excel during the two instrumental breaks. This is the archetypal Cliff and The Shadows' sound at its very best from the first Luxembourg recordings sessions made during the summer of 1960 and would prove to be a real winner if ever the original were to emerge on transcription disc. The sound quality recorded from the radio is only average, and suffers from a little too much bass. But the song still stands out as one of the best of the sixty-plus songs Cliff recorded for the Luxembourg shows. Also one of the longest tracks recorded - lasting nearly three minutes compared to the average of two.

MC: what a pity Cliff and The Shadows did not record many more of these echo-drenched gems (this one taken up from Chris Kenner by the ever-present Fats Domino) before The Beatles stepped in to wow us all (well, nearly all) with some of the similarly styled rock songs of the period.
