CLIFF RICHARD & THE SHADOWS ON RADIO LUXEMBOURG

#27: LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL
(Louis Jordan)
1960

This rock 'n' roll track is unique in that it was not recorded at any studio other than Radio Luxembourg. During May, June and July 1960, Cliff and The Shadows were preoccupied with finding new musical material to record alongside their existing repertoire for the forthcoming 'Me And My Shadows' series. During these three months Cliff and the Shadows recorded over forty songs at Radio Luxembourg's London Studios, including many that were new to them at the time. These included A Teenager's Romance, Kansas City and Let The Good Times Roll.

Cliff was also rehearsing for two television shows over this period – both of them ATV 'Saturday Spectaculars', broadcast on 21 May and 30 July 1960. So pleased was he with the new Luxembourg songs that he decided to include them in the TV shows. For the May show Cliff included Kansas City and A Teenager's Romance, and in the July show he performed this track, Let The Good Times Roll. The original telerecordings to both these shows have fortunately been preserved for posterity though they have never been transferred for viewing.

The quality of the Luxembourg recording made from radio in late summer 1960 is fairly good and loud, although some radio interference spoils the broadcast.

MC: a clear and clean copy of this particular number from the pen of one of the founding fathers of rock 'n' roll would be well worth having, boasting as it does a groovy Hank intro with assured delivery from Cliff, who works in the line "me and my Shadows just hit town".
