PAUL RUMBOL:
CLIFF RICHARD & THE SHADOWS ON RADIO LUXEMBOURG

#26: LAMP OF LOVE
(Sid Tepper/ Roy Bennett)
1960

This catchy rock 'n' roll track was one of the highlights of Cliff and the Shadows' much feted Me And My Shadows album released in October 1960. It was officially recorded at Abbey Road Studios on 30 March 1960, and was one of 24 tracks laid down during five intensive recording sessions held between 15 March and 1 April 1960.

The song featured on BBC Radio's 'Saturday Club' on 14 January 1961 and a brilliant version was performed on the fifth show of Cliff's six-part television series for the ATV network, simply called 'Cliff', on 16 March 1961. The original telerecordings to this series survive but remain unseen to this day.

The quality of the Luxembourg recording made from radio in late summer 1960 is only fair/ middling but is constant throughout without any radio interference.

MC: the lyrics are nothing to write home about, but the Album performance of this number is a knockout, with Cliff and the group in red-hot form. This RL outing, said to be "a number we're featuring on the next LP", is pretty bare and unadorned in comparison with the fully developed cut, lacking as it does the distinctive line-by-line lead guitar accompaniment.
