CLIFF RICHARD & THE SHADOWS ON RADIO LUXEMBOURG

#20: I WANT YOU TO KNOW
(Dave Bartholomew/ Fats Domino)
1960

Cliff and the Shadows delivered a great version of this rocking Bartholomew/Domino composition for the 'Me And My Shadows' 1960 series and the sound quality is fairly good too. It is interesting to note that Cliff introduces the song title as Don't You Know at the time when this show was aired around October 1960. Two takes – mono and stereo – were recorded at Abbey Road Studios for inclusion on the Listen To Cliff! album released in May 1961. The superior mono version was recorded on 4 March 1961 with Cliff in top vocal form and some great guitar work from Hank. The stereo version (released on the rare stereo LP) had been recorded five months earlier on Thursday 13 October 1960 and is more simple in its delivery, only toying with the song rather than getting to its heart, and sounds rather amateurish in comparison with the well produced mono version.

The track was also recorded for BBC Radio's 'Saturday Club' hosted by Brian Matthew on 22 April 1961.

MC: The Listen To Cliff! mono version boasts a couple of solos from Mr M. which must be reckoned among his finest, the stereo cut being markedly inferior in the soloing (the second in particular seems very ill-judged: hurried maybe?) and general approach. The RL version is notable, as these cuts often are, for the energetic supporting vocals; the solos (the track is faded at the close of the second in the surviving recording(s)) are lacklustre.
