Many of Elvis' classic songs featured in Cliff's repertoire and I Gotta Know was a track he performed intermittently between 1959 and 1963. The Luxembourg take is of only average quality but The Shadows' arrangement is refreshingly different from the official recordings made at Abbey Road on 26 July [mono]/6 September [stereo] 1959 and released on Cliff's second album Cliff Sings in November 1959. Their accompaniment on this Luxembourg track is much more snazzy and quite haunting in some respects – in comparison to Hank's more country-orientated version on the above mentioned album.
Cliff performed this number on BBC Radio's 'Parade Of The Pops' in 1962 (together with Do You Wanna Dance) and on 'Blackpool Night' on 28 July 1963.
MC: the country flavouring of the LP versions is all but eradicated in the RL outing, with a string of inventive fills from the resonant Marvin Strat making their presence felt from start to finish.
