PAUL RUMBOL:
CLIFF RICHARD & THE SHADOWS ON RADIO LUXEMBOURG

#16/1: HANG UP MY ROCK 'N' ROLL SHOES (1960 version)
#16/2: HANG UP MY ROCK 'N' ROLL SHOES (1962 version)
(Chuck Willis)

This is another of those tracks not recorded by Cliff and The Shadows in any other studio. Two versions of it were featured in the 'Me And My Shadows' shows. The earlier 1960 take features a slightly faster arrangement with a harder edge to Cliff's voice and the added bonus of an instrumental solo during the song.

The song was originally a hit for Chuck Willis. Cliff had performed it on BBC Radio's 'Parade Of The Pops' on 19 November 1960 and also at the Olympia Theatre, Paris, on 14 May 1963 – which was a concert recorded by Europe 1 radio station. This track, together with Dancing Shoes and It'll Be Me from the live show, was released on the 4 CD Rock 'n' Roll Years Box Set in 1997.

MC: in the first RL cut Cliff sounds as if he wants to be a rocker, and both he and the band do the song justice. At Olympia Cliff sounds as if he is having a job keeping his adrenalin or indeed anyone else's adrenalin flowing (was the audience instructed to sit there in decorous silence one wonders?), so muted and laid-back is the performance; RL Mark 2 has a bit more pep than this, but arguably not nearly enough.
