CLIFF RICHARD & THE SHADOWS ON RADIO LUXEMBOURG

#07: DO YOU WANNA DANCE
(Bobby Freeman)
1962

This was Cliff and the Shadows' seventeenth single, released in May 1962. With its flipside I'm Lookin' Out The Window, it gave Cliff a double-sided hit reaching number 2 in the UK Pop Charts. The song received extensive radio airplay at the time. Apart from the Luxembourg version, Cliff and The Shadows performed it twice on BBC Radio's 'Saturday Club', on 31 March and 22 December 1962, and also on BBC Radio's 'Easy Beat' programme, on 15 April 1962 (recorded 11 April: "By my reckoning that was Jet Harris' last recording with The Shadows", Rob Bradford), and on 'Parade Of The Pops' on 2 January 1963.

Several vintage television performances also survive. Cliff and The Shadows performed the song on Dutch TV's 'The Rudi Carrell Show' on 8 April 1962 and there exists some raw live footage of this number from the previous day at the Ahoy Concert Hall in Rotterdam. Do You Wanna Dance also appears on BBC's 'The Billy Cotton Band Show' from 12 May 1962 which has just recently surfaced, having been lost for over forty years. Another surviving performance is from 'The Ed Sullivan Show' in the United States on 14 April 1963.

The sound for the 'Me And My Shadows' show in 1962 is of only average quality. The volume output is loud but bad reception mars some of the broadcast.

MC: a Luxembourg recording from hell this one, a useful starting-point for anyone out there who feels impelled to discourse on the various strands of interference captured by avid fans; it is doubtful if the listener will reap any reward from such an aural battering, and what can be heard of the song sounds unexceptional.
