PAUL RUMBOL:
CLIFF RICHARD & THE SHADOWS ON RADIO LUXEMBOURG

#04: BLUE SUEDE SHOES
(Carl Perkins)
1960

Another Elvis classic recorded by Cliff at Abbey Road on 7 September 1959 for inclusion on his second album release Cliff Sings in November that year. This version here recorded in 1960 is really exciting stuff — in contrast to the rather lame and easy-listening version on the LP. Cliff rocks through this track with some real angst in his voice, and The Shadows deliver two great instrumental solos. This is a rock 'n' roll classic delivered by Cliff with great style. The quality of this recording is fairly good and loud without too much radio interference. There is a one second break at the beginning of the recording however.

MC: this stellar number is approached in two different ways. The Cliff Sings version reflects something of the gentle bounce and indeed urbanity of the Perkins original, whereas this Luxembourg outing has the rougher edge we associate most notably with the Presley version, with some wild bursts of jangly guitar. Recordings were made for Luxembourg in 1959, and the guitar sound strongly suggests that this was one of them.
